I’m really not all that surprised.
Every social safety net has been on the chopping block by the GOP with little to no retaliation from Democrats. Now the GOP is attacking the PELL Grant which provides working class folks better access to education. By the way, the Grant still doesn’t cover all of college costs (tuition, room/board, fees, books, transportation, etc), and many students still end up taking out loans.
And of course conservatives continue with their classist assumptions about working class/poor folks. All of this talk about “Lazy,” “Welfare,” and “Food Stamps” etc. is based on classist (and often racist, although this article is colorblind) assumptions about the working class/poor folks. It’s called the working class because WE ARE THE WORKERS!
“The Obama administration has been trying to restrict Pell Grant eligibility at for-profit colleges that have really poor outcomes for students,” he said. “Many Republicans have been fighting it tooth and nail. So it’s interesting to hear them say things like how they’re very concerned about all this Pell Grant money being wasted on people who don’t get degrees and seem to be sitting around not doing much of anything. We know that if that type of behavior is going on, it’s going on most at these for-profit colleges. There seems to be a major inconsistency in some of the rhetoric there.”
